Farmer makes half-mile wide heart from manure

For his wife this Valentine’s Day, a farmer has created a half-mile wide arrow-pierced heart recognizable from the sky about 12 miles southwest of Albert Lea.

Following plans he jotted on scratch paper, Bruce Andersland drove his tractor and manure spreader earlier this week in the special shape for his wife, Beth.

On Thursday afternoon, the Tribune was on the telephone with Beth when she had her first look at the aerial image, taken through Minnesota Aviation by Albert Lea pilot Darren Schone.

With a gasp, Beth said, “Now I’ve got my Valentine! That’s pretty cute.”

She said it was the biggest and most original Valentine she has received in her life.

Bruce said he had the idea because the square-mile, snow-covered field seemed fitting for something.

“There’s such a nice field there. I thought we could just do it for fun,” he said.

Bruce began the project Wednesday and finished Thursday.

<img src="http://media.albertleatribune.com/img/photos/2010/02/11/0212.halfmile.heart.2_t180.jpg?370a03faaa4bde2115f371a02430eb3e6a451be5" alt="The heart made of manure is recognizable only from the air.
The heart made of manure is recognizable only from the air. It is in Section 24 of Mansfield Township in Freeborn County.

Beth first discovered he was working on the heart when he emptied his pockets on Wednesday night. She asked him about the scratch paper with the heart pattern on it, and he explained.

“He thinks of cute things to do once in a while, so I was a little surprised,” she said.

Beth raises purebred Simmentals on their farm. That makes getting a Valentine made of manure actually a good thing.

“That’s just part of farm life. Doing something fun and creative with it makes farming fun,” she said.

The heart, she said, would be darker except for the heavy snowfall in the past week that fell in the cattle pens. The snow mixed with the manure, so the spreader ended up spreading manure and snow.

The heart is in Section 24 of Mansfield Township. The Anderslands, who have been married for 37 years, live just across gravel road 670th Avenue in Nunda Township, near the bottom of the heart. The farm has been in the Andersland family since 1923.

Kathie Hanson of Minnesota Aviation said it was a special assignment the pilot enjoyed fulfilling.

Join our love movement here in NYC and around the globe. This isn’t about Hallmark Cards or needing to have the perfect relationship. This is a to remind us that love starts with loving ourselves & grows when we share it with others….just like the rays of the sun.

We invite love into our lives by celebrating the sunrise & sharing Valentines we make or decorate with heartfelt sentiments with others. We get together on Valentines Day & throughout the year to watch the sunrise & random valentine people.

Join us for an event or on any morning you can
do this at sunrise .

Dress up in an outfit or costume that exemplifies love to you.
Bring some valentines. You can buy & decorate or make them yourself.

FIRST Take in the beauty of the sun. The gift that happens everyday . As you watch it imagine that the rays are filling you with love & burning away any heart ache or pain.

take a picture & post it here!

SECOND Give some random valentines to people you see or go find them.

Besides being a great way to cheer up other peoples day it feels great!

I’ve been doing it for the past few years and its incredible!

Sunrise Valentine started as my art project at Burning Man & is now on a mission to Valentine NYC & then the world

Below is a bit more about Sunrise Valentine

Sunrise Valentine

Sunrise one of my favorite times is symbolic of new beginnings, and as the sky lights up so does my spirit. After the mystery of the night the sun bursts across the sky shining warm and oh so brightly.

It is the ultimate Valentine, because at this moment it is as if the sun itself were a valentine given to us freely any morning we choose to wake and experience it. Valentines Day has always been my favorite holiday because it is the one day that it is encouraged & “safe” to be loving to people, to give them heart shaped chocolates, little valentine cards, flowers. I remember and still love to give the little valentines we gave in school. In fact I enjoy giving them more now, a cultivated openness and innocence with open eyes, now after I have grown and know how much the heart can hurt, and how wonderful it feels to be filled with self love. Now it is all the more sweet and special to make the conscious decision to be loving, just because, because it far outweighs the risk of being hurt, because I know how amazing it is to love, love my life, love my friends, love myself. I have chosen to fiercely hold on to love no matter what because I know in my heart that it is what matters, as Ken Wilbur says, Only love will shine today…and this is what I give to you my love, to you as another traveler on the road, as a living creature, as a spark of life. I give you a loving look, a wish , from a being who has looked deep into herself and with all the shadows, and dark spaces, loves herself deeply, fiercely, often, and without regret. I do this trusting, knowing that it can make a difference, if someone is feeling down, depressed, feeling unloved. People need to know to be reminded that they are precious that they are a loveable being…and each time you do it there is a part of you that listens and knows you are loved too.
I wish this for you that you know that you feel love..may love shine today.

Here is a Love Your Body post from our sister Be Wild Woman blog http://bewildwoman.wordpress.com/

I invite you to take a moment to look in the mirror and embrace what you see. Perhaps you could start with one part of you that brings you pride or that you would like to commit to loving.

Just saw a great article in Shape’s February Magazine, called “How I learned to love my body”. Six women share what they love about their body and why. I especially liked how the body parts they used weren’t what our culture would deem, “perfect” and perfectly illustrated how we can learn to love and embrace ourselves just the way we are.

For each there’s a picture and a quote..here’s a few of their quotes..

“when I look at the scars on my belly, I know I can handle anything life throws me”
Maggie Vanbuskirik,25

“While they may never be featured in an ad for lotions or rings my hands have enabled me to help, soothe, and calm the people I love” Eva Bridget, 48

When I read the one about the belly it reminded me of how I used to extremely self conscious about my stretch marks. Then I had a lover tell me that they were a beautiful natural tattoo. Since then I think of them as the stripes that I earned giving birth to my son and a badge of all the love I have for him. Here’s my pic:

I invite you to share yours here!

Here’s a great way to start your morning with a gift, gratitude, & love.

FIRST Take in the beauty of the sun. The gift that happens everyday.

If the sun has already risen you can click here to watch one.

Bring your hand to your heart and your attention to your breath. As you inhale imagine that you are being filled by the sun as it rises with love, joy, and anything else your heart desires.

SECOND Give some random valentines to people you see or go find them.
You can be creative with your valentines. They can be cards, notes, or even a kind word or smile you give to people.

and here’s a bit about what Sunrise Valentine means to me

Sunrise one of my favorite times is symbolic of new beginnings, and as the sky lights up so does my spirit. After the mystery of the night the sun bursts across the sky shining warm and oh so brightly. It is the ultimate Valentine, because at this moment it is as if the sun itself were a valentine given to us freely any morning we chose to wake and experience it. Valentines Day has always been my favorite holiday because it is the one day that it is encouraged & “safe” to be loving to people, to give them heart shaped chocolates, little valentine cards, flowers. I encourage you to take Valentines beyond the hallmark experience or the finding the perfect love I remember and still love to give the little valentines we gave in school. In fact I enjoy giving them more now, a cultivated openness and innocence with open eyes, now after I have grown and know how much the heart can hurt,. Now it is all the more sweet and special to make the conscious decision to be loving, to risk the hurt, to be vulnerable, because I know how amazing it is to love, love my life, love my friends, love myself. I have chosen to fiercely hold on to love no matter what because I know in my heart that it is what matters, as Ken Wilbur says, Only love will shine today…and this is what I give to you my love, to you as another traveler on the road, as a living creature, as a spark of life. I give you a loving look, from a being who has looked deep into herself and with all the shadows, and dark spaces, loves herself deeply, fiercely, often, and without regret. I wish this for you may love shine today and every day. May it be a beacon that lights your path and keeps you warm. May you always know that you are loved.

valentine blissings

as I last wrote I was on my way to my hawaii…a place I consider my spiritual home…for a wedding and a memorial, beginning and an end. both affairs of the heart, one opening the heart to love, commiting to love, the other love ending letting go of a love, closing one door and opening another. Both are love affairs. part of the cycle of love all begin and end. as I sat on the beach watching the tide ebb and flow, I thought about how life goes in these cycles in an out…we don’t always have a choice about what comes in and out of our life, we do have a choice about being open to the flow of life…We can choose to open to love and choose to let go of what no longer serves us. If we are open to the flow it can be a joy just as watching the waves, or body surfing and riding the waves. If we resist we can end up like a boat broken and battered by the waves.

Go with the flow and ride the waves of love in your life.

Remember that every beginning is an end, every end a new beginning.

As my friends embarked on their new journey together with vows of commitment, they were also saying farewell and letting go of what was before.

As the ashes were scattered into the ocean, and loved ones were poignantly bid farewell, a new fresh start was also being ushered in.

In both cases, dwelling on what was, be it old patterns, wounds, or loving memories, can keep one from seeing the beatiful new path ahead, holding on to and staring at flowers that once bloomed so beautifully….don’t miss the present…that fleeting moment that is done as you read these words, wake up! and catch the sun rise.

Every day you have an opportunity to witness and be present. Every morning the sun rises magnificent whether you watch it or not. It is a new day everyday, a beautiful sunrise given to us every morning as it arrives, and a equally stunning sunset as it leaves, given to us over and over, everyday.

An incredible mini cycle for us to observe and to understand that beginnings and endings are both beautiful, and that love has shone, will shine today, and will again and again, tomorrow, and the day after…etc

doing some research on getting t-shirts done. started with a-z printers in san jose california, because without them wouldn’t have had tickets printing in time.

So here I was the night before my flight still trying to figure out how to put the words and logo onto the tickets. It seemed like it would be so simple. Fast forward to San Jose the next day at noon and find me still sans tickets but hoping to find a way. I had three hours to kill waiting for my trip mate to arrive, so after realizing there was no business center at the airport, I called information. What do you know there was a printer on airport parkway, less than five minutes away. So I jump in this cab with this sikh driver and his “co-pilot” son, and my two huge pieces of luggage, one weighed some 70 plus lbs, and awkwardly made it through the door of the business center with my unwieldy bags in tow.

Out comes John C. Shaw, the president of A-Z printing and escorts me into his office, where I see jackets, t-shirts, and hats emblazoned with logos, and realize its not exactly the kind of printer I’m looking for but still hoping he can help. After one look he starts to suggest that kinko’s nearby would be able to help me, nonetheless he came through and after two hours of fiddling around on the computer, we figured it out, and voila I had my printed tickets.

I am so appreciative that John went out of his way to help me and after all that charged me nothing. One thing he said stood out to me, People come to us because we do what other printers won’t” in other words they go the extra mile just because its the right thing to do…and I would say that does come back to them. I for one, after seeing him go out of his way to help me with my project, would definitely reccomend him. Furthermore, I got to talk to him and learned that he is part of men’s group that is starting an after-school program with the local public schools to help disadvantaged youth , with mentoring, and scholarships. Now these are the kind of people I like to support, people doing loving things in their lives, and making a difference. How fitting that I get help with my love project from a-z pringing if you ever need any printing done check them out www.a2zspeciatyadvtg.com

sending out much love to a-z printing….do you have any stories to share of people you didn’t know saving your day?

love saved the day,

So now I’ve handed out the rest of my tickets…save two that I’ve promised to save…one for Marisa, and one for Phil.

I had a few left on Thursday and gave them out at the Full Moon gathering and drumming at Alex Grey’s Chapel of the Sacred Mirrors. I didn’t get a chance to go to their camp at the burn and see Alex painting so I figured I would see them all still with their after-burn glow at the chapel, and that there would be plenty of playa energy floating around. Sure enough I ran into many of those I missed seeing at black rock city, and also to connect up with those who did not go dancing and drumming with spirits and hearts wide open. I was not dissapointed to say the least and had so much fun giving valentines out and dancing ecstatically.

Afterwards I met up with my friend alfred/amelia-naire who took over my campsite, allowing all my things to still be on the playa, and my costumes to still have fun out there, got me to the airport on thursday for my early return to nyc, and now returned to me the rest of my valentine tickets that still were meant to be given.

So I decided that I would still give them out and have been thinking of how to keep this going…to keep valentining and sharing love with people throughout the year….

so a great place to start was friday night at Body Temple’s free party on the Hudson on the pier at 68th st. When I arrived I found a writhing and bouncing crowd of high energy dancers, blissed out to the beat. After bouncing around and dancing a bit myself I started valentining people…. and before you know it the tickets were all gone.

Tonite I was out without the tickets..so I brought a little stamp I had made that says Love Will Shine Today and has under it the website. The stamp at night is a bit hard to see but for now it will do until I come up with new valentines to give out through out the year.

So much fun to give things to people just because. Very interesting to watch people’s reaction, from scepticism, to curiosity, to recognition, and delighted appreciation. I find it to be a great exercise in learning to love unconditionally without expectation, whether people appreciate it or even get it. Of course I hope more people get it and can take in a little bit of love, and if you got a ticket I hope you are reading this and I wish you much love…..and if you want to be in the raffle get me your info this week…we’ll be picking a winner this next Saturday September 16th.

 love will shine today
